Let It Mean Nothing: A Reflection on Neutral Awareness
Share
Awareness is practiced through noticing rather than reaction.
Not everything needs a reaction.
The mind moves quickly to assign meaning.
To objects.
To thoughts.
To what appears in front of us.
Meaning arrives almost instantly, followed by judgment, preference, or resistance.
Much of the weight we carry begins there.
Letting something mean nothing is not denial.
It is a pause in interpretation.
When interpretation pauses, perception softens.
Objects remain.
Situations remain.
But the charge lessens.
A cup is a cup.
A notification is a notification.
A moment is just a moment.
Without the added story, experience becomes simpler.
Not empty.
Just unburdened.
The mind is trained through repetition. It can also be retrained through awareness.
This simplicity does not require effort.
It appears when the habit of assigning meaning loosens.
In that loosening, space opens.
And within that space, presence is already here.
